CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The holiday season is one of the best times of year to spend with friends and family, however, the mess that’s left afterwards can cause some confusion on what garbage bin to use.
The City of Calgary has released a guide on what people should do with certain items.
The blue cart is used for cardboard, paper, glass jars, and any plastics labelled one through seven. But according to the City, odd items still appear at the sorting facilities.

“We have run into a few issues where people have put some Christmas lights and some other contamination in the blue cart,” said Sharon Howland with the Calgary’s Waste and Recycling Services. “This is called a dangler or tangler at the recycling sorting facility, according to the staff,” added Howland. “What happens is this will tangle up in the equipment, jamming things up.”
If you are throwing out miscellaneous items, Howland says your best option is to look for donation centres.

“Reach out to organizations like the Drop-In Centre, Women In Need Society, they are always looking for usable goods.”
For Christmas trees, the city has 13 locations where you can drop them off or you can chop it up and stuff it in the Green Bin.
If you’re throwing away unusable or broken items the best place to place it is the black cart.
