CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s been a deadly start to the New Year with Calgary police investigating a number of suspicious deaths in the first weekend of 2020.
Police have reassured Calgarians they’re continuing to work to prevent incidents like this in the future.
To help with their investigations, Calgary police have created a new inspector position.
“It’s a senior officer position, and that person’s responsibility is to oversee the work of various different specialty units around the organization around this particular issue,” said Police Chief Mark Neufeld.

Officers are also working on enhancing their strategy for gun violence, but it’s still in its early stages.
“That strategy, not finalized just yet, will have four priorities streams; we will be predicting, preventing, protecting, and pursuing,” added Neufeld.
Calgary Police have entered a challenging year with recent budget cuts putting pressure on CPS resources, resulting in many officers working a great deal of overtime.
Although resources are being stretched thin Neufeld said addressing violent crimes remains the force’s top priority.
