CALGARY (660 NEWS) — During Monday’s council meeting at city hall, the recent increase of gun violence within the city will be addressed with a proposed public safety task force.

Ward 5 Councillor George Chahal is putting forward a motion to introduce the task force meant to battle the ever-growing concerns of guns and gang violence.

“This task force is extremely important due to the public safety concerns we’ve seen with the increased gun violence over the last year,” said Chahal.

“This public safety task force will help bring the community together with the government to find solutions and best practices on how to deal with this issue.”

Chahal says he believes that to properly address the issue, a proper multi-pronged approach is needed.

“I think it’s important to look at all opportunities, such as preventative initiatives to ensure that our youth are not getting involved in these types of criminal activities. It starts with education from a young age.”

He believes helping those who already have found themselves caught in the spiral of crime is also an important step.

“We need to work together as a community with other orders of government to find the appropriate solutions that are collaborative and in the best interest of our city and our community.”
