Should Alberta be concerned about major food supply shortages across? And what if the United States shuts downs as COVID-19 cases continue to climb?

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – The United Conservative government is assuring Albertans that food will not run out amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Agriculture Minister Devin Dreeshan spoke Thursday morning saying while buying patterns have changed, retailers have responded to the increase in demand.

“Food is essential and we are in constant contact with our food suppliers and we will do whatever it takes to keep them open. I want to assure all Albertans that our food supply will remain safe, secure and accessible.”

Dreeshan adds there’s no need to stockpile food and supplies as it can create unnecessary pressure on the food supply chain, putting the most vulnerable at risk.

Premier Jason Kenney spoke to those hoarding supplies during the crisis earlier this week saying he’s appalled it’s happening in the first place.
