Orphaned moose calves released into the wild after months of care

MADDEN (660 NEWS) – Through the efforts of many participants, two orphaned moose calves have been successfully released into the wild.

Back in 2019, a calf walking with her mother and sibling fell down a hill and was trapped by some debris. Unfortunately, the mother did not return for her after she was freed and left in the area.

The second calf was admitted a few weeks later after her mother was struck and killed by a car near Grande Prairie. It took 1,211 kilometres of driving to transfer the calf to the Alberta Institute For Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) wildlife hospital northwest of Calgary.

AIWC said that it was only due to the hard work of the community and advice from wildlife centres across North America that the calves were able to be reintroduced into the wild.

It took 303 days of care for the first calf, 234 for the second, for the two calves to be released.
