More than 400 Calgary Transit employees laid off

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The City of Calgary has had to lay off more employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

City Manager David Duckworth said 430 Calgary Transit workers have been laid off as fewer people are taking transit.

“Transit ridership is down almost, nearly 90 per cent and the impacts of COVID-19 have required us to take significant steps with relation to the demand in our services,” Duckworth said.

He said they will be ready when ridership begins to ramp up when the province reopens.

Meanwhile, there will be changes to routes as fewer people are taking transit.

“This will mean approximately 25 routes will be temporarily suspended, these were generally routes that duplicated other services. So, we made sure that folks could still access the bus, but maybe not an express route or bi-directional route,” said Doug Morgan, Transit General Manager, where some routes may end earlier and will be fewer weekend routes.

Duckworth added they have laid off nearly 15 per cent of their workforce.

More information is expected next week, with these changes coming into effect May 25.
