Lethbridge martial arts facility won’t reopen next week

LETHBRIDGE (660 NEWS) — After much discussion, the owner of a martial arts facility is changing his tune on reopening his gym.

Lee Mein told CityNews earlier this week he planned to reopen the Canadian Martial Arts Centre in Lethbridge despite not being allowed to in the current stage of the province’s relaunch strategy.

But after meeting with an Alberta Health Services representative and Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf the gym will not reopen June 1.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Mein said they were all working to see what could be done to help reopen the gym.

“The plan right now is I’m waiting to hear back from everybody, I laid out the protocols, what we want to do and how we want to open and what our plans are,” Mein said in the video.

“Hopefully, something comes sooner than later. So, as for Monday, we won’t be opening for classes yet because we’re waiting to hear back.”

Mein cited the mental health of his students who were unable to train for two months and it was more important than “fears over the pandemic.”

Instead, Mein said later in the video, they will be holding a BBQ on Monday that will follow all of the physical distancing guidelines after receiving an abundance of community support.
