Council debates mandatory masks on Calgary Transit

City Hall discussion focuses on masks on transit, but that could lead the way for bylaws covering much more.

CALGARY (CityNews) — Calgary City Council is expected to make a decision tonight on whether or not masks will be mandatory on public transit.

The debate last night going well into the evening, with Mayor Naheed Nenshi saying that the discussion needs to be had now as restrictions begin to ease.

Council’s debate began just a day after about 150 people attended an anti-mask rally outside of City Hall, saying they don’t want it to be the norm.

Mandatory masks for transit users could also lead the way for bylaws that would extend to other city properties, or rules requiring them in all Calgary public spaces, as the City considers a phased approach.

A survey from the City found that 34 per cent of participants are always wearing masks in public, and more than 60 per cent said they’d feel safer if masks were made mandatory on public transit.

But, there were also questions about whose jurisdiction it is to mandate masks – the province, or the municipality.
