Charges laid after laser pointed at HAWCS helicopter

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A 44-year-old Calgary man faces a long list of charges after he allegedly pointed a laser at the HAWCS police helicopter.

Early Friday morning, just before 3 a.m., HAWCS was assisting with an investigation when a laser was shone into the cockpit.

Moments later, patrol officers travelling in marked vehicles downtown were also struck by the laser.

HAWCS was able to quickly locate the source of the laser, tracking it to an apartment building on 15th Avenue S.E.

Police headed to the scene and knocked on the door of the apartment, but the occupant refused to answer.

Later in the day, a warrant was obtained and officers were able to search the premises.

Inside, they found almost a kilogram of methamphetamine, 20 kilograms of what is suspected to be a cutting agent, over $20,000 in cash, a sawed-off shotgun, a Winchester rifle, numerous rounds of ammunition, and other items related to drug trafficking and fraud. A Class 3B visible beam laser was also found.

Kamran Sattar faces 14 criminal charges relating to drug trafficking and firearms offences, and also two offences under the Canadian Aviation Regulations and Aeronautics Act for shining the laser at the helicopter.

“Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a serious offence that we will investigate thoroughly,” said Staff Sergeant Jodi Gach of the CPS District 1 General Investigations Unit in a release. “In this case, investigators came together very quickly to identify the offender, and as a result a significant amount of methamphetamine and firearms were seized by police.”
