CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary man who was driving the wrong way on a highway was taken to hospital after his car rolled into a ditch and caught fire Sunday morning.
The RCMP say the 36-year-old was driving into oncoming traffic on Highway 22 north of Cochrane, Alta.
Cpl. Susan Richter says police pursued the dangerous driver, who continued in the wrong direction while cars avoided him.
“Other drivers that were oncoming had to take evasive action to get out of the way of the suspect vehicle,” said Richter. “They were able to do that until a semi was coming and tried to get over. The driver ended up striking the side of the semi and the suspect vehicle entered the ditch and rolled.”

Richter says the man’s vehicle then caught fire. Alberta Sheriffs extinguished the blaze while RCMP pulled the man from the vehicle and arrested him.
He was taken to hospital “as a precaution” with non-life-threatening injuries. Cochrane RCMP say nobody else was injured in the incident.
An investigation is ongoing. Police anticipate charges will be forthcoming.
