CALGARY (660 NEWS) – An Alberta business is going ahead with its promise to send five cargo planes stocked with food and medical supplies to Beirut following last month’s deadly blast.

MHCare Medical, an Alberta PPE supplier, says the second-of-five planes carrying humanitarian aid will take off for Lebanon on Sunday.

The company’s owner, Sam Mraiche, says he felt a personal calling to help the situation overseas.

“I definitely felt the need and urge to put together a humanitarian campaign/mission to get needed assistance and emergency supplies to Lebanon – importing much-needed medical supplies from all over the world,” said Mraiche.

Beirut was rocked by a deadly explosion on Aug. 4 when more than 2,000 tons of improperly stored ammonium nitrate ignited at the city’s port. An estimated 191 people died and thousands more were left injured and homeless.

MHCare Medical’s cargo planes will be stocked with emergency food kits, medical drugs, firefighter equipment and toys for families in need. The items will be delivered to hospitals and local non-government organizations.

The humanitarian mission is in partnership with community group Operation Ramzieh.
