‘Done everything they could do’: Cavalry FC’s run at Island Games comes to close

CHARLOTTETOWN (660 NEWS) — The 2020 Canadian Premier League season is over for Cavalry FC.
The Calgary team fell to rival Forge FC in Tuesday’s must-win that would’ve advanced the Cavs to The Island Games’ finals.
“When we went forward, we lacked a bit of that quality and that goal against, we can’t concede that,” captain Elijah Adekugbe admitted of the 1-0 setback. “The reality is, we lost, and we’re going home.”

It marks the end of a hectic stretch for the Cavs, who opened the bubble-style tournament in early August and saw them play 10 matches in just over a month.
“It’s hard for me to sit here and bemoan this, that and the other, when they’ve done everything they could do, ” head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said of his squad. “I can’t fault their effort, their heart, their willingness to run, to compete with a very good team. We just lacked quality.
“They’ve gone injury after injury. We’ve got five players that can’t step on the pitch. We’ve got a turn of events with cards this and other things that. We can’t make other people’s decisions, and it goes a different way in a different game.
“It’s been a fantastic tournament and a great way to get a 2020 something out of it.”

What’s next for the team that calls Spruce Meadows home?
Wheeldon Jr. says, while waiting for confirmation from the league, the start of 2021 preseason is earmarked for March.
“We’ve got to keep growing this league. It’s a fantastic league to be a part of.”
