EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – The UCP government said they will be funding three Emissions Reduction Alberta programs through the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system and the federal Low Carbon Economy Leadership fund (LCELF).

The government will be providing up to $280 million.

The funding will also support around 5,000 jobs and cut down on about 13 million tonnes of emissions by 2030.

“The TIER system is key to Alberta’s economic recovery, supporting projects that cut emissions, attract investment, keep industry competitive and get Albertans back to work. This investment comes at a critical time when Alberta must be bold in driving economic recovery,” Premier Jason Kenney said.

About $180 million is coming from the TIER fund and $100 million is from LCELF.

The money will help small, medium, and large industries in all different sectors across Alberta.

The projects could be anything from carbon capture, utilization and storage, and industrial energy efficiency.

“We’re equipping our job creators with the resources they need to move forward on projects that reduce emissions, reduce costs, and create good jobs. Alberta is a province of innovators, and I am proud that the TIER system continues to support our province’s leadership in emissions-reducing technology,” Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks, added.

“This commitment of new provincial and federal funding will help unlock the development and deployment of the technologies we need to stimulate the economy now and create the lower-emissions industries of the future,” said Steve MacDonald, CEO, Emissions Reduction Alberta.

Emissions Reduction Alberta programs include Shovel-Ready Challenge, Energy Savings for Business program, and Partnership Intake Program.

With the funding, Shovel-Ready will be putting out calls for “leading-edge technologies” from big in industrial sites to reduce emissions and create work.

“By investing in leading-edge technologies and demonstrations, Alberta’s investment in ERA and the Shovel-Ready Challenge will provide immediate economic value, while advancing long-term technology innovation and environmental goals across several sectors,” said Lonnie Enns, Senior Vice president of power supply, ENMAX.

The Energy Savings for Business program will “help Alberta’s small and medium-sized facilities benefit from industrial and commercial projects that can be installed quickly to cut emissions, support jobs and add an estimated $300 million to Alberta’s economy.”

Lastly, the Partnership Intake Program will not only continue supporting projects that reduce emissions, but it will strengthen financial support for new technologies.
