Local seniors’ residence asking Calgarians for Christmas cards

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A northwest Calgary seniors home has taken to Facebook to try and lift the spirits of its residents this Christmas.

The Sage Hill Retirement Residence posted several photos this week asking people to send its seniors a Christmas card this year.

The Facebook post has been shared over 9,000 times since Tuesday.

Larry Matheson with the Kerby Centre said seniors are feeling isolated at this time.

“Most of what we do is around reducing isolation and creating community for seniors. Now we’re in an environment where isolation for seniors is exacerbated by this pandemic.”

Matheson added that any organization working with seniors has been facing difficulties this year and are trying to find creative ways to help fight that isolation.

He’s hoping that no matter what Calgarians decide to do, we shouldn’t forget about the elderly population at this time of the year.

“I think anything that members of the community can do to connect with seniors whether that be in a virtual way or sending cards makes a difference and it creates that connectedness that has almost disappeared for us because of this pandemic.”

Matheson added all seniors can receive a card this year at any retirement residence.

You can also consider donating to seniors organizations.
