You can recycle lots of wrapping paper and boxes this Christmas, but don’t overload your bins

CALGARY – After you open all of the gifts under the tree and you have with piles and piles of torn-up wrapping paper, the City of Calgary asks that you don’t overload your blue or green carts.

“First and foremost, we ask people to re-use things that they can, and that can be gift wrap or bags, bows and ribbons, even fancy boxes and tins,” said Leader of Program Management Jason London.

If it can’t be re-used, wrapping paper and tissue paper, boxes, and even bubble wrap can go in the blue cart.

Your real Christmas tree can go in your green cart.

“They just have to sort of chop up their trees, so that it all fits nicely in the cart and can go into our trucks. There are also 19 other Christmas tree drop-off locations around the city,” adds London.

There are a few schedule changes to be aware of–if your cart is usually picked up on Christmas or New Year’s day, it will happen instead on Dec. 28 and Jan. 4.
