EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Following days of public outcry, several UCP staff members have stepped down after travelling abroad over Christmas.
Premier Jason Kenney addressed the controversy on Facebook Monday saying he has accepted the resignation of Municipal Affairs Minister Tracy Allard and has asked his Chief of Staff Jamie Huckabay to step down, which he has done.
Both had been under fire for trips they took over the holidays while people were being asked to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Kenney said he has also accepted the resignation of Jeremy Nixon as the parliamentary secretary for civil society and Jason Stephan from his position on the Treasury Board.
“Millions of Albertans have made real sacrifices over the past 10 months to help keep each other safe,” Kenney said on Facebook. “They are right to be angry about people in positions of leadership vacationing outside of the country.”
“By travelling abroad over the holidays, these individuals demonstrated extremely poor judgment.”
Kenney said that Transportation Minister Ric McIver will serve as interim Minister of Municipal Affairs, and his Principal Secretary Larry Kaumeyer will serve as interim Chief of Staff.
