Dad convicted in drunk driving crash that killed daughter appealing sentence

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary man convicted in a drunk driving crash that killed his teenage daughter is appealing his sentence.

Last September, Michael Bomford was ordered to spend five-and-a-half years behind bars for the 2016 crash and banned from driving for eight years.

During the sentencing hearing, the court heard that Bomford had three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system when he drove his daughter and her best friend and crashed his SUV into a median on McKnight Blvd.

The now 20-year-old woman who survived the crash told Bomford’s sentencing hearing that she has a permanent brain injury, has lost social skills as a result, and has memory problems after three surgeries.

In a notice of appeal, Bomford is requesting an acquittal or a retrial but if those fail, he wishes to see a reduction in his sentence and his driving prohibition.

He said the trial judge made errors by relying on text message evidence, which he claims were hearsay and that the sentence was unreasonable.
