ROCKY VIEW COUNTY (660NEWS) — After weeks of consultation and public input, Rocky View County has voted against an open-pit gravel mine.
On Wednesday, council declined a land-use re-designation application by Lehigh Hanson Materials Ltd. for the Scott Pit site in Bearspaw.
There were two days of public input Rocky View County Reeve Dan Henn said there were almost 100 submissions.
“In my time as a councillor this was the most public input we’ve had at a public hearing and obviously the most opposition that I’ve seen to an application as well,” Henn said.

Many concerns arose from those public submissions and Henn added there was a lot of feedback.
“There’s a lot of feelings that the dust generated is harmful to the health. There’s a lot of thoughts that it’s going to severely damage or completely ruin water wells in the area,” Henn added.
“A lot of it was just general compatibility, just the fact that the gravel pit is in a residential area or close to, adjacent to a residential area and a community like Bearspaw.”
This is the third time a gravel pit application in the area has been denied by the county.
