Historic Calgary Court of Appeal building to be restored

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Over $57 million is being invested into a new court of appeal facility in Calgary.

The Alberta Government says this funding will be doled out over the next three years.

The old court of appeal building has not been used since 2003, instead, they’ve been leasing a space in the Trans Canada Tower. However, criminal matters have to be heard at the Calgary Courts Centre.

Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Kaycee Madu explains the old building, located at 5 Street and 7 Avenue SW will be getting a facelift, and a new building will be built in the grassy lot behind it, as an add-on.

“The project will honour our history by renovating and revitalizing Calgary’s historic court of appeal,” said Madu. “The new building will have the space and the functionality necessary to serve the public safely and securely for many, many years to come.”

He adds there will also be 570 good-paying jobs supported in the process.

Madu explains this project is a small part of what the government is working on as far as modernizing Alberta’s justice system.

“We are reforming the Police Act, we appointed an Alberta Parole Board, and we will soon be appointing a Chief Provincial Firearms Officer,” he said. “We are using new strategies to fight rural crime and shorten response times in rural areas.”
