CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It has been a hold onto your hats type of weather situation for much of southern Alberta.
Wind warnings for Calgary and surrounding areas including Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds and Strathmore have ended.
The freak blast of winter sent temperatures plummeting as much as 25 degrees overnight according to 660 NEWS meteorologist Michael Kuss.
“A powerful and fast-moving pacific low-pressure system tracking across the prairies now. We are into the colder, arctic air, even though the snow tapers off, the winds will persist all day long.”
Meanwhile, the snow and winds did make for tough conditions on city roadways.
“With the wind and the cold temperatures, that can create icy conditions on trouble spots such as bridge decks, hills,” said Chris McGeachy with the Calgary roads department.
Crews worked through the night to plow through lanes on Priority 1 routes and are continuing to focus on high volume roads such as Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail Monday morning.
Good morning, while our crews worked through the night, we encourage you take your time on your commute today. Stay safe! Here's an update: #yyctraffic #yycsnow pic.twitter.com/KjrZltn6L3

The extreme weather is also battering several other regions in Alberta with snowfall warnings in place for the Crowsnest Pass, Ft. McMurray and Kananaskis along with a winter storm warning for Hanna, Coronation and Oyen.
The wind and snow led to poor visibility for many drivers out on the roads Sunday night.
Update: Still in this hot mess. I’m honestly terrified. I thought it would ease up once we left Banff or Canmore, but it hasn’t. #abstorm @Crackmacs @660NEWS @CBCCalgary pic.twitter.com/KGXHBMZ7Le
