Rock thrown through window of education minister’s office

RED DEER (660 NEWS) – Alberta’s education minister said it’s “completely unacceptable” after someone threw a large rock through the window of her Red Deer constituency office.

Images on Adriana LaGrange’s Twitter page Tuesday afternoon, show the damage caused by the rock as well as glass, shattered and littering the floor of the office.

LaGrange said the event was likely in protest to the province’s draft K-6 curriculum released late last month.

“While I have always encouraged peaceful protest and debate on issues that matter to Albertans, violence and vandalism is completely unacceptable,” LaGrange said on Twitter.

Thankfully no one in the office was harmed.

The K-6 curriculum has been heavily criticized by the Opposition NDP, public education groups and Indigenous leaders since its release. Many believe the content, particularly in social studies, “whitewashes” Canadian history.

There’s also controversy that many parts of the draft curriculum were plagiarized from online sources.

On Tuesday, more than 50 people held a protest along 17 Ave. S.W. near the constituency office of UCP MLA Nicholas Milliken.

Those who attended the protest say the curriculum is developmentally inappropriate, racist and focuses more on memorization than learning.

Some teachers who attended the protest say they’re trying to include Indigenous content in their lessons but the draft curriculum has thwarted those plans.

Many groups are calling for another re-write of the curriculum and more consultations with teachers, parents and Indigenous peoples.
