Alberta identifies 1,690 COVID-19 cases, five additional deaths

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Alberta identified 1,690 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, 1,184 of which are variants of concern.
Just one day after reporting the first case of the B.1.617 variant, no new cases of the strain currently wreaking havoc in India were reported in the province.

Variant cases now make up over 60 per cent of all active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.
The province is approaching 20,000 active cases of the virus, with 19,446 current infections.
As of Friday afternoon, 549 people are in hospital with COVID-19, with 125 now in the ICU, an increase of 9 from the day prior.
Five additional deaths were reported on Friday.
As for vaccines, the province saw another good day of numbers with 44,500 doses administered in the last 24 hours.
To date, over 1.3 million doses of vaccine have been administered.
