More water restrictions? Calgary’s mayor speaks to coming temporary shutdown

Calgarians could face another round of water restrictions next month, just months after the last one ended.

Months after the last bout of water restrictions, Calgarians could face another round next month.

Posting on social media, Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down for less than a week in September to complete electrical work.

“This is planned work. It’s not because Calgary is running short of water,” Farkas says. “We need to temporarily shut down the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant to complete electrical work for a new pumping station. This is part of the North Calgary Water Servicing Project.”

Restrictions are something Calgarians have dealt with many times before.

In this case, the decision on whether restrictions will be put in place will be dependent on the weather and how much water Calgarians are using.

“If restrictions are needed, we expect some outdoor water use would still be allowed.”

More restrictions are expected for about four weeks in mid-October, as crews complete the final work on the replacement pipe for the Bearspaw South Feeder main, which has burst on two different occasions.
