Ward 6 Councillor Jeff Davison announces his bid for Calgary mayor

Ward Six Councillor Jeff Davison says he will be going for the top job in October election, hoping to replace outgoing three-term Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Ward 6 Councillor Jeff Davison has announced he will be running to be Calgary’s next mayor.

Davison made the announcement during a Facebook Live on Wednesday.

Davison is the fifteenth person to put his name down in the running for Calgary’s top office.

He also joins two of his colleagues, Ward 3 Councillor Jyoti Gondek and Ward 11 Councillor Jeromy Farkas, in the race.

“Over the past four years, my job, as a city councillor, has been to help us through these incredibly tough times,” Davison said. “For a lot of people it seems other city councillors have spent more time fighting each other and with other levels of government, than fighting for what’s best for our city.”

Davison went on to talk about his work in Ward 6 and how, up until recently, he had planned to continue in his current role.

But, he says the city needs a collaborative leader come October and he plans to be just that.

“We need the right leader to set the right tone, to drive efficiencies, to remove the hurdles that hamper us as a city, and bring council together through collaboration and collective vision.”

Davison says his campaign isn’t a list of the things he would do as mayor, but rather a continuation of the things he is already doing.

He also talked about how he’s heard a lot of people say the city needs to focus more on being more businesses friendly and Davison says he agrees, but he thinks Calgary needs to do business and better and re-establish the city as “the place to do business.”

“But, we also must remember that the City of Calgary and City Council are a service, we’re a service to Calgarians, it’s a service that needs to operate at the speed of business, not at the speed of government.”

He then went on to talk about city services and the importance of being in tune with the people and businesses the city serves.

“That means we must look at reprioritizing city spending to ensure we provide the highest quality city services at the best dollar value.”
