Alberta Health Services granted restraining order against man who publicly threatened AHS employees

CALGARY — Alberta Health Services (AHS) has been granted a restraining order against a man who has publicly threatened harm to AHS employees.

The restraining order is against Kevin J. Johnston, a man who recently threatened to show up at the homes of AHS members armed because of their enforcement efforts of the Public Health Act.

He’s also in the running to be Calgary’s mayor.

Johnston had threatened to gather the names and home addresses of the employees and publicly release them.

“We’re going to track down those AHS people,” Johnston said in a video posted to his Facebook page. “I know that AHS is watching. We are tracking it now.”

He then went on to say he already had seven employee addresses so far.

“So, AHS, your comfortable little lives are going to be very uncomfortable so long as I am in Alberta, which is going to be a very long time.”

“Mr. Johnston has engaged in persistent threatening conduct and communication in the media and on social media over the past number of weeks,” AHS said in a release. “He has engaged in aggressive and threatening behaviour towards specific individuals employed by AHS as well as the general AHS workforce. AHS took this legal step to protect our staff and to ensure they are supported and cared for. ”

Under the order, Johnston is prohibited from being in contact with AHS employees, vising AHS sites (except for care), or being within 100 meters of a public health officer.

He is also prohibited from publishing threats online directed at AHS employees as well as showing up at their homes.

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Ward 3 Councillor Jyoti Gondek raised concerns about the release of voter information earlier this week due to Johnston’s threats.

Nenshi had said he needed to take a look at the legislation around the release of the list to see what precautions can be taken.

While Gondek took to Twitter to voice her concerns.
