Calaway Park exemption order no longer valid, park to remain closed

CALGARY — Alberta Health has confirmed Calaway Park will not be permitted to open in June under the current public health restrictions.

The amusement park was planning on welcoming guests, saying it had a public health order exemption that would allow them to open on May 22.

The park decided to move the opening weekend to June 5, due to the current COVID-19 situation.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, was asked about the exemption order during Thursday’s COVID-19 update, but said she had no knowledge of issuing the order.

“I’m not aware of an exemption that’s been provided to Calaway Park,” she said.

Calaway Park responded shortly after saying the order was obtained in June 2020.

“The exemption clearly states that it is in effect until terminated by the Chief Medical Officer of Health. We have received no written notification that these exemptions have been withdrawn or changed,” a statement on the park’s website said.

“We informed Alberta Health of our plans to delay our opening in efforts to help ‘stop the spike’, and again received no indication of a change to our exemption. We hope this provides our Guests, Team Members, and community with clarity on our public health order exemption.”

Alberta Health tells 660 NEWS an exemption order was granted to Calaway Park last year, however it is no longer valid.

“Under the current restrictions in place, Calaway Park is not able to open to the public at this time,” the statement reads. “We will follow up with them to ensure there is no confusion.”

“We know that the health restrictions impact these centres and the many people who love them. The quicker we can all bend the curve and get vaccinated, the sooner that life can safely start getting back to normal.”
