A man is facing charges after an alleged random attack at a south Calgary CTrain station last week.
Calgary police say officers were at the Somerset-Bridlewood train platform around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday when a man came up to them with facial injuries.
The victim told police that another man confronted a woman on the platform and shouted racial slurs at her before hitting her in the face. The victim allegedly stepped in to help and was also attacked.
The suspect ran from the platform and was chased by officers on foot while other units moved in to block off the area. The suspect was found nearby a short time later.
The man who intervened suffered minor injuries. There is no word on the woman’s condition, and investigators say they haven’t been able to talk to her yet.
Police are calling the attack random and are looking into whether hate was a motivation.
“This incident is deeply concerning and has no place in our community, everyone deserves to feel safe using public transit and going about their daily lives without fear of violence or hate,” says CPS Insp. Darry Midtdal.
CPS says officers have been conducting targeted enforcement at Somerset-Bridlewood, Shawnessy, and Fish Creek-Lacombe stations since the spring in response to ongoing “ongoing crime, disorder and public safety concerns.”
Steepan Surane, 38, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of assault and one count of obstruction. Police say he also had 11 outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
Investigators are asking the woman who was assaulted, or anyone else who witnessed the incident, to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call Calgary police at 403‑266‑1234, or reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
