Calgary police hunt for suspects after ‘concerning’ violence in southwest

CALGARY (CityNews) – Police tape and large yellow bags strung to fenceposts lined the crime scene of a fatal shooting in Bankview early Saturday evening.

An investigation has been opened into what police say was a targeted attack, which left one person dead in the southwest Calgary community.

The Calgary Police Service say that they received calls for gunfire in the 1800 block of 26 Ave. S.W., and sent officers to the scene at about 5:30 p.m.

When they arrived, police found a man inside a vehicle in the alley behind 26 Avenue S.W.

He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after the shooting, officers located another vehicle that was on fire along the nearby 31 Avenue S.W.

Witnesses have told police that multiple suspects had jumped into a second car to make their getaway, which is being described as a blue, four-door vehicle, possibly a Subaru Impreza or Legacy.

The suspects have not yet been located, but police believe that it was a targeted attack.

“The level of violence demonstrated in this incident is extremely concerning to us,” wrote Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta in a release Saturday evening.

“We are dedicating resources from across the Service to this investigation to ensure that the individuals involved are held accountable.”

An autopsy has been scheduled for the coming week.
