CALGARY – Police are releasing more information about a murder over the long weekend that investigators say is linked to an ongoing gang conflict in B.C.’s lower mainland.
Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, police were called to 26 Ave. and 17 St. SW for reports of gunshots.
Upon arrival, they found the victim, Gurkeert “Gary” Singh Kalkat, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Kalkat, 25, died at the scene.

While this shooting was targeted, police say there were several nearby bystanders who could’ve been harmed in the shooting.
Detectives say immediately after Kalkat was shot, the suspects abandoned their first getaway car, a stolen Honda Oddesy van with stolen plates, in a nearby alley. They transferred to a second getaway car, a blue four-door Subaru Impreza.
The suspects took off, but not before lighting the van on fire.
Police believe that one of the suspects burned himself while torching the car and may have significant burns on his hands and arms.
Police have checked in with hospitals in B.C. and Calgary and have been in touch with law enforcement in B.C. but have yet to identify a suspect.
The suspects could still be driving the Impreza.

Police have confirmed that Kalkat was the brother of a man shot and killed in Burnaby, B.C. two weeks ago, and had been staying at a halfway house in Calgary.
Homicide Unit Staff Sgt. for the Calgary Police Service, Martin Schiavetta, expects retaliation from this incident.
“Obviously we are very concerned about the level of violence that is occurring, not only within our city but also in the province of British Columbia,” he said. “As we know with gang violence, it is very retaliatory in nature, and I would expect further violence to result from this.”
