Cyber attack on JBS Canada disrupts operations in Alberta

CALGARY — A cyberattack on the world’s largest meat processing company is now affecting operations in Alberta.
JBS Canada, which operates the meat processing facility in Brooks, announced on Facebook that shifts had been cancelled at the plant on Monday, and one shift had been cancelled Tuesday as a result of the cyberattack.
The attacks also shut down a large number of meat processing facilities in the United States and Australia.

The Brazil-based meat processor notified the U.S. government on Sunday of a ransom demand from a criminal organization likely based in Russia.
The White House says it is directly engaging with Russia on the issue.
This comes just a few weeks after a ransomware attack shut down a pipeline in the U.S.
The company involved in that incident admitted it paid the hackers millions of dollars in ransom to access its data.
