Summer events will include Canada Day fireworks, says Nenshi

Calgary will have fireworks on Canada Day, and an art installation will return this year after a successful run last year.

CALGARY – The city is planning ahead for more summer events year as COVID-19 restrictions are easing, setting the stage for some fun in the sun.

This includes Neighbour Day, which is scheduled to take place on June 19 with some different options than you may be used to. There are also “arts expeditions” events happening this month in numerous neighbourhoods around the city.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says they will also have more news to come on Canada Day.

“By and large we are again encouraging people on Canada Day to get together in smaller groups–to get together in a safe way–but, I can tell you now, there will be fireworks,” the mayor said.

For Neighbour Day, people are encouraged to have a small get-together with neighbours and consider virtual options as well.

Nenshi encourages people to be creative for Neighbour Day, as it won’t be business as usual.

“No, it’s not going to be the best summer ever,” Nenshi said.

“It could be a summer where we take stock of where we are as a community, where we mourn what we lost and who we lost, where we turn the page on a bright future with optimism, hope, and open eyes.”

You can also contact your local councillor or the mayor to request an appearance, either in person or online for your Neighbour Day celebrations.
