Demand for A/C units up as Calgary faces blistering heatwave

CALGARY – If the upcoming heatwave has you desperate for air conditioning in your home, you may have to wait a while.
Calgary is expecting temperatures to be in the 30s for the next week or so, with Environment Canada forecasting highs as high as 36 degrees.
Owner of Horizon Heating and Cooling Matthew Kramer says the typical wait for installation right now is about two weeks, a little longer than usual.
“We don’t get hot weather like this all the time so people get in a panic mode and want to explore their options for air conditioning,” he explained.

He says, along with high demand, many in the industry are also dealing with material shortages.
“It’s also to do with shipping over the border–a lot of this equipment comes from the United States. Manufacturers cant even find shipping containers to load their equipment in. And everything seems to take longer these days,” he said.
“Another contributing factor–and this happens quite often–is when the United States has a heatwave, those products tend to be shipped there instead of Canada. We are, unfortunately, a smaller market so when the United States wants something they get first dibs.”
Kramer says they are handling a lot of requests for quotes for air conditioning systems right now, and finding the right one takes some patience.
