Edmonton votes to end mask bylaw for indoor public places on Canada Day

EDMONTON (CityNews) – Edmonton’s city council has voted in favour of ending its mask mandate in indoor public spaces on Canada Day.

In a 7-6 vote on Friday afternoon, councillors decided to end the bylaw that required the masks to be mandatory, on July 1.

The indoor requirement previously meant people had to wear masks in retail stores, restaurants and recreation centres, in line with the provincial orders.

Masks will still be required on transit, taxis, and vehicle-for-hire services, as part of a province-wide directive from Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

Edmonton council first passed the mask bylaw in August of last year, when the province left the authority up to each municipality.

More to come…
