Fire ban issued for Calgary

A fire ban has been issued for the city of Calgary after dry weather, increased smoke and reduced visibility have become an issue.

CALGARY — A fire ban has been issued for the City of Calgary.

After Environment Canada issued a Special Air Quality Statement for the city as wildfire smoke rolled into town, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) issued the fire ban to help support the health and safety of Calgarians.

“The Calgary Fire Department closely monitors all conditions throughout the year,” says Deputy Chief Ken Uzeloc in a release. “Today’s fire ban reflects significant, increased risk of air quality resulting from wildfire smoke and a need to restrict burning that would contribute to this.”

The fire ban includes the prohibition of the following:

  • Open fires
  • Fire pits
  • Outdoors chimeneas
  • Recreational solid fuel barbecues and stoves
  • Tiki Torches

The CFD says the ban will remain in place until further notice when smoke and weather conditions are no longer deemed a risk to health and safety.
