Calgary Indigenous man’s regalia stolen from vehicle

CALGARY – Kyle Young Pine says he was at a loss for words when he went to his car Friday and was horrified to find his regalia gone.
His car was parked at his Penbrooks Meadows home in southeast Calgary.
“The worst thing that could have happened, happened. And that was me. I was just in shock,” he recalled.
The Kainai man is known as a Fancy Dancer.
He travels to pow wows and makes money through competitions. Recently performed all 10 days at the Stampede.

He says the regalia is worth just shy of $8,000.
“But, it’s like, that’s just the outfit itself. You have to put into consideration the other accessories like the hankies or shirts and I’m starting from scratch. It’s crazy.”
The dollar amount is not what he’s worried about–the outfit to him is priceless.
“That’s my baby, right? I just had brand new hackle bustles made, those pink and black ones. The Stampede was the first time I used them so that’s like–holy crap, they’re gone.”
He made a post after it was stolen, and it has been shared over 1,000 times.

A fundraiser to help him get new items has raised almost $3,000.
“That outfit is going to be completely built by the community.”
Young Pine says after the last year of hardship, he knows there are worse things that can happen and is thankful for the support he’s received.
