Funnel cloud advisory issued areas northeast of Calgary

DRUMHELLER – Weather conditions in the area northwest of Calgary today could lead to funnel clouds developing, says Environment Canada.

The weather agency issued a special advisory for Drumheller, Three Hills, Oyen, Hanna, and Coronation Monday morning.

It says funnel clouds are possible starting early Monday afternoon.

“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado,” reads an alert from Environment Canada.

If funnel clouds look like they’ll turn into a tornado, the agency says it will issue a watch or warning as needed.

“Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.”

Environment Canada says the risk will slowly drift to the north and the advisory will likely be expanded this afternoon then ended early this evening.
