ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting, standoff in southeast Calgary

CALGARY — The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating following an officer-involved shooting and standoff that took place over a 14-hour period Wednesday.
Around 1:40 a.m., police saw a Chevy Malibu, that was deemed to be stolen, speeding through the community of Rundle.
Shortly after, the driver of the car transferred to a Nissan Altima, which was also believed to have been stolen.
HAWCS followed the vehicle as it drove erratically and at high rates of speed which raised concerns for public safety.
A patrol car then passed the suspect vehicle along 18 Avenue SE, at which time the Altima pulled a U-turn and began following the police car.

The suspect car then pulled in front of the police car, slowed down, and brought both vehicles to a stop.
Some form of confrontation took place between the officer and suspect that resulted in the officer shooting at the suspect.
No injuries were sustained in the confrontation.
The suspect then got back in the car and continued down Glenmore Trail, eventually fleeing and going into a home.
The suspect stayed inside the home for most of Wednesday, until eventually leaving around 3:45 p.m. and was safely taken into custody.
No injuries were sustained by officers or the suspect during the course of the standoff.
The officer who fired his gun has now been placed on 30-day administrative leave.
