Calgary opens new Prairie Sky Cemetery, first in over 80 years

CALGARY – A new cemetery is now open on the southeastern edge of Calgary

Prairie Sky Cemetery is next to Ralph Klein Park and is the first new cemetery in the city since Queen’s Park opened way back in 1940.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says this is a reflection of the growth that has happened in Calgary since then.

“To me, this is a wonderful tribute to the land. It’s a really beautiful place, but it will also be a place that will serve as a place of solace and honoring for generations and generations of Calgarians. And for me, that’s what really matters here.”

The cemetery is also open to more modern burial options and is first location for green burials.

“There is an emphasis, for example on cremation, which is becoming increasingly popular for many people,” he said.

“We have an ability to do a different kind of earth-friendly burials, and hopefully we’ll be able to expand that folks who find that important.”

The cemetery has been in development since 209 and is 65.3 hectares.

Prairie Sky Cemetery grounds are open every day from sunrise to sunset.
