$6M unspent, 2,200+ local businesses claim money as part of business relaunch grant program

CALGARY — More than 2,220 local businesses were able to claim some money through the city’s business relaunch grant program as of Sept. 1.

The program, which was launched in June, provided a total of $15 million to help businesses with reopening costs.

However, in an update to the Priorities and Finance Committee on Tuesday, administration pointed out that $6 million went unspent.

Ward 8 Councillor Evan Woolley is now asking if more can be done to support bars and restaurants that now have to cut liquor service by 10 p.m.

A motion put forward by Mayor Naheed Nenshi was passed which will allow the city to use those remaining funds to help businesses still suffering because of the pandemic.
