Calgarians seeking counselling amid fourth COVID-19 wave

CALGARY – With masks making a return amidst a fourth wave of the pandemic, many are having a hard time coping.

Psychologist Christine Berry with the Calgary Counselling Centre says they’re getting just as many calls as they did last August from people who need help.

She recommends not putting so much pressure on yourself.

“Give yourself permission to just experience what you’re experiencing as opposed to saying there’s something bad about me because I’m feeling the way I am,” she said.

“I think that’s an important message for people to know that anticipation and anxiety, all of those things they’re a normal response to a difficult circumstance.”

Berry says just being able to voice what you’re feeling can be a relief.

She encourages anyone struggling to reach out for help, and the counsellors will begin helping you as quickly as they can.

The centre has seen a 40 per cent increase in calls since 2019.
