Ten additional deaths reported as Alberta identifies more than 1,400 new COVID-19 cases

CALGARY — The province’s death tally from COVID-19 continues to rise, as ten more deaths were reported on Friday.

The new deaths add to an already devastating week, with 54 total COVID-related deaths in the last seven days.

In total, 2,444 people have died from the virus in Alberta.

Over the last day, there were 1,473 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Alberta.

The new cases come after 13,625 tests were completed, for a positivity rate of around 10.9 per cent.

There are now 16,265 active cases of the virus in Alberta.

Of the active infections, Calgary continues to lead the province with 3,408 of them, while Edmonton now has 3,210.

There are now 686 people in hospital with COVID-19, 169 of which are in the ICU.

Of those in the ICU, 147 are unvaccinated, or about 87 per cent.

Over the last week in Alberta, hospitalizations have risen 33 per cent, while ICU admissions are up 43 per cent.

Of the eligible population in Alberta, 78.9 per cent have one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 70.9 per cent are now fully vaccinated.

To date, 5.63 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.
