Special city council meeting will look to fix implementation of vaccine passport in Calgary

Calgary’s councillors are heading to the chambers Wednesday to look into what actions the city can take to streamline the provincial health orders.

CALGARY — A special Calgary City Council meeting has been planned for Wednesday afternoon and it could be used to create a more clear vaccine passport for the city.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi dealt blows to the province on Tuesday, saying “as always, the Government of Alberta botched the implementation of (the proof-of-vaccination card).”

“They forced municipalities and individual businesses to make up their own mind,” said Nenshi. “So, I am recalling City Council (Wednesday), even though we’re supposed to be done for the term, to consider a city bylaw to bring clarity to the issue to get rid of all these loopholes so that every single person knows exactly what they’re doing.”

Nenshi says it’s crazy that someone between the ages of 12 and 18 could go to a hockey practice but wouldn’t be allowed to go to a dinner following the practice.

“So, let’s just do this correctly and do it right, and stop trying to tie ourselves in knots.”

Nenshi adds that he spent some time with a group of small businesses in Calgary and the message he received was that people want a vaccine passport to be called as such, and for it to be brought in clearly so people can know that, if they go to a restaurant, the people at the table next to them, are in fact, vaccinated.

The provincial government has received criticism for its implementation of the vaccine card, due to how easy it is to manipulate for unvaccinated individuals.
