Municipal Election 2021: The future of the City of Calgary

With just five city councillors running for re-election, and Mayor @Nenshi hanging up his hat after ten years, who you elect this fall will shape the future of Calgary. Tara Overholt reports on the changing faces for this year’s municipal election.

CALGARY – With just five city councillors running for re-election, and Mayor Naheed Nenshi hanging up his hat after 10 years, who you elect this fall will shape the future of Calgary.

At the very least, nine new councillors and a new mayor will be leading the city at a time when vision and leadership are important.

Political scientist Lori Williams says the city is facing a host of issues.

“What are we going to do about tax revenues, what are we going to do about downtown vacancy rates? How are we going to manage economically with decreased property tax revenues, increased monies taken by the provincial government, and the need to attract business to the city,” she said.

With several long-time councillors like Druh Farrell and Shane Keating not running for re-election, and other councillors throwing their hats in the ring for mayor, Williams says Calgarians will need to look further afield.

“That means we’re looking at a very different council. People are going to want to get more information on a candidate’s experience, how they manage disagreements, and how effective they are at advocating for different projects.”
