Naheed Nenshi tweets goodbye as Mayor of Calgary

In a video message, outgoing mayor Naheed Nenshi thanked Calgarians for giving him “the honour of his life”.

“It’s been an extraordinary 11 years,” Nenshi said in a video posted to Twitter. “And while my political story is ending, the city of Calgary is still continuing. The story of our service, of how we work together to make this place better.”

Nenshi leaves behind a legacy of humanitarianism and leadership. He became known for guiding the city through the devastating floods of 2013, after which he was re-elected for the first time, and then again in 2017.

Nenshi has earned many accolades over the years for his work, including the 2014 World Mayor Prize for being the best mayor in the world. Nenshi says the promise of Calgary is a simple one.

“Regardless of where you come from or what you look like, regardless of how you worship or whom you love, you belong here, you’re safe here, you have opportunity here,” Nenshi said.

“Your kids and their kids will have amazing, great, Canadian lives, right here.”

Nenshi told Calgarians to keep using their hands, hearts and voices to make the city even better going forward. He was mayor for 11 years before deciding not to run again for re-election.

He also congratulated Jyoti Gondek on her election win becoming Calgary’s first-ever female mayor, tweeting, “History. Made.”
