Proof of full vaccination required Monday to visit participating Alberta businesses

Beginning Monday, Albertans will need to be fully vaccinated to be allowed into businesses that require a proof of vaccination, such as many bars and restaurants.

Previously Alberta’s vaccine passport, which was introduced in September, as a restrictions exemption program, allowed single-vaccinated individuals to frequent those non-essential services.

That’s changing Monday. The government’s proof-of-vaccination app will only recognize individuals as fully vaccinated if they have received two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or one dose of Janssen (Johnson & Johnson).

If not fully vaccinated, Albertans can provide a negative COVID-19 test from the prior 72 hours or a valid proof of medical exemption.

Alberta’s program is voluntary, but those businesses that do not participate are subject to restrictions – including severely reduced customer capacity and operating restrictions. All businesses must continue following the mandatory mask requirements.

The province’s downloadable app is available to display and verify a QR code as proof of vaccination.

As of Nov. 15, Albertans will need those QR codes to prove they have been fully vaccinated.

The passport was one of multiple policies put in place in Alberta to arrest a surge in COVID-19 cases.
