Duelling groups of protesters denounce, support Sean Chu

Two different groups of protesters gathered outside Calgary’s city hall on Sunday afternoon – one opposing, and another supporting Ward Four incumbent Coun. Sean Chu.

The groups at Olympic Plaza were separated by a line police officers.

Duelling signs of “Resign Chu” and “Calgary Needs Councillor Chu” could be seen in the crowd.

There have been growing concerns in Calgary regarding two incidents that happened while Chu was a police officer.

Chu has admitted that he was disciplined for inappropriate sexual contact with an underage girl while he was with the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in 1997, however, no criminal charges were laid.

And a CBC report claims Chu was involved in a domestic incident with his wife that involved a firearm and resulted in a police response back in 2008.

Chu announced he will not be stepping down as Ward Four councillor, despite some calls for him to do so, including from Mayor-elect Jyoti Gondek.

Gondek announced last week she would not participate in swearing Chu in at the ceremony on Monday.
