Alberta government to release second round of funding to non-profits

The Alberta government plans to release $7 million to non-profits across the province.

It’s the second round of funding as part of the Civil Society Fund, which aims to provide $20M over three years.

The funding is part of the 2020/21 provincial budget.

“This is a part of government’s commitment to working in partnership with charities and civil society to really leverage their huge potential and connections in the community so that we can be a lot more effective,” Jason Luan, Minister of Community and Social Services, told CityNews in an exclusive interview.

It allows organizations to apply for government funding on new projects. Each applicant can request up to $1M.

Luan says his department will examine each application on its own merits.

“When we talk about community-based support, it comes in all shapes, sizes, and recommendations,” he explained. “The bigger the project, the [more] you ask for, the higher the scrutiny and examination will occur.”

Luan says every project will be carefully screened.

“The real impact is, how will you demonstrate tangible change to people you said you’re going to serve. How do we know people’s life conditions will improve as a result of your [project]?

“This is another action to demonstrate the Government of Alberta is committed to working in partnership with the community,” Luan added. “We wanted vulnerable Albertans to be included in economic prosperity and we wanted to have tools to enable community-based mental-health support services.”
