Racist, hateful words were painted on a road leading to a Calgary Sikh Society. Despite being the target of a hate crime, the Sikh community wants to fight racism with communication and compassion. Kristy Kilburn reports.

Calgary’s Gurdwara Sahib temple in the southwest appears to be the victim of a racist attack.

Police say sometime between 9 p.m. on Oct. 24 and 7 a.m. on Oct. 25, two racist messages were found spray-painted on the road leading to the temple.

The Dashmesh Culture Centre says it was disappointed and saddened to find the graffiti.

“While we believe this is the actions of a few, we encourage everyone to accept everyone as one and take the time to learn about your neighbors,” the group writes on Facebook.

“While this display of racism is very hurtful, we want to take this time for all of us to come together and show support to all people regardless of background or beliefs. We are all stronger together.”

This isn’t the first time Dashmesh has been targeted.

Swastikas were painted on the building years ago in another racist act.

Police say this is unacceptable and they are working with the community to find those who did this.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.
