Body pulled from car on brink of falls in Niagara River

A dramatic scene unfolded in Niagara Falls on Wednesday after a woman was pulled from a car on the brink of the American Falls.

Local police say a car plunged into the upper part of the river around 11:30 a.m. and became stuck in the rapids just short of the falls.

A Coast Guard helicopter hovered above and lowered a rescuer down to the water. That person was able to pry open the passenger side door of the car — only the roof of it was above water.

State Park police confirmed a woman in her late 60s was pulled from the vehicle. She is believed to be the only occupant in the vehicle.

Police continue to investigate how the car ended up in the river.

Authorities said the woman lived in the area. Her name was not released pending notification of relatives.

After the rescue, the vehicle remained about 50 yards (meters) from the brink of the American Falls, one of three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls. Onlookers watched as emergency crews prepared to try to pull the vehicle from the water.
