Wave of Arctic air to wash over Calgary

A Blast of arctic air will drop the temperature well below seasonal. Tara Overholt reports on whether the city is doing anything to help our most vulnerable this week.

You’ll have to dust off your warmest winter coat as a flood of Arctic air is expected to wash over Calgary this week.

Meteorologist Michael Kuss is forecasting some snow to start Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Then the temperatures dip way down compared to what we’re used to.

“The Arctic air is cooling down from Northwest Territories and beyond all the way up from the Arctic Circle. And instead of what we have seen for the most part this fall, finishing off near Red Deer and all points north, I’m seeing some cold air we just haven’t had it around Calgary. That changes this week that arctic air plunges all the way down into Montana,” Kuss explained.

“Temperatures drop off to about -14 again tomorrow, in the afternoon we’re back to some sun with a high near -12. Wednesday is partly sunny and up to -12. Thursday, we’ll have some flurries and only -11. Friday, although, it will be cold in the morning at -23 degrees with the sun in the afternoon. It’s slightly warmer air pushing it should get up to about -7 or -8.”

As for the snow, we could get up to about eight centimetres overnight.
